Goreme Open Air Museum Visit!

Sitting at an ancient table... carved from the same stone that the cave is made of!

Just one of the cave structures in the Goreme Open Air Museum

Danni did not like all of the walking that we had to do to explore the museum!

She was smilier after we found a cave bridge and got some donderma!

Cave houses are SO cool!!

Inside a cave living room :)

Taking a little break from exploring!
The Open Air museum was huge...  that is just a portion of it behind us!

This was a chapel and had ancient artwork on the walls.  Incredible that it has lasted so long!

Ancient cave people were on the short side!

These caves are now used as pigeon houses!

It was a cold day... but worth it to brave the elements to see so much cool history!

We traveled down the mountain to the town of Goreme and explored the Open Air Museum there.  The 'museum' was a collection of structures that had been carved out of the soft volcanic stone in the 4th century.  We were surprised at how many of these caves and buildings were open for tourists to climb into and to explore... given the soft nature of the rock!  Just brushing the stone with your fingers caused it to crumble and to create dust on our hands!  We saw a bunch of chapels and churches (in most of them, photography was not allowed, in order to preserve the frescoes on the walls!)  It was amazing to see artwork that had been created so many years ago, still here and looking beautiful!!  It was a cold and rainy day, and we did a TON of walking... to help our moods stay positive, we ended our visit with some dondurma!!!
