Awestruck at the Hagia Sophia!

Don't let the outside of the Hagia Sophia fool you...

It was really quite beautiful inside!!  Marble everywhere!

This was an echo-ey alcove!

The painting on the ceilings was amazing!

Gorgeous!

Entering into the main sanctuary.

They were doing some restoration work, but it was still breathtaking!

Danni and I were even amazed.  It was cool... for a boring place!

I wanted to jump to see if I could touch the chandelier.  I didn't.

More beauty on the second floor.

Incredible!

A pretty girl with pretty stained glass...

A view all the way to the top.

You can see the need for restoration in this picture.  And the marble floors have cracked ... the plates make noise when you walk on them.

Apparently, no place is too sacred for Danni's craziness...

Taking a rest.

Cool tiles were inlaid in the walls...

This is the tunnel that led to the upper floors...

This was the Sultan's library.

Posing on a little 'stage'

People used to wash their feet here...

Window shopping...

Taking a rest!

Sillies!

Most of the marble on the second floor was cracked.

I just stared and stared....

This bell used to be in the bell tower...

We couldn't read these letters... but it was cool to look at!

A ginormous sepulchre

The giant black door at the entrance... (we exited from there... it was still awesome!)

Statue Z!

A view from in front of the Hagia Sophia -- that's the Blue Mosque behind us.

The Blue Mosque was impressive on the outside, but the Hagia Sophia blew it out of the water once we got inside!
Our last stop on our day of visiting boring historical sites was the Hagia Sophia. It was built in 537 and started as a Greek Orthodox Church... it eventually was converted to a mosque and remained a mosque until 1931.  All of the depictions of Christ, Mary, Christian saints and angels were removed or plastered over... and were only uncovered when it was reopened as a museum in 1935.  It was the world's largest cathedral for over 1,000 years!  We were all impressed with how beautiful the interior of the Hagia Sophia was!!
